“If we realize all things change, there is nothing we will try and hold onto.” – Lao Tzu
Nature is an exquisite teacher. The cycles following one another bring important revelations about life itself and about renewal. This is why living consciously with seasonal changes, being responsive to the environment is of utmost importance. Being out of sync, means a constant fight against the stream.
As a matter of fact, deciduous trees can teach us a great deal. They drop their leaves every year so in springtime, new life can come about. If they wouldn’t let go of their matured leaves, renewal wouldn’t be possible. Thus, they show us that we cannot hold on forever.
Fall is a perfect time to ask ourselves what are we holding onto and does not serve our growth anymore
The trees in autumn show both their vulnerability and resilience and these usually go hand in hand. This time is just perfect for letting go. We tend to hold on to dead things be that material or emotional mostly because we are afraid of being completely “naked.”
Letting go without anxiety, standing in our own center, relieved and beautifully exposed, is where inner work starts. Ask yourself what you have to release, what holds you back, what you need to let go so spring can arrive.
Only change is constant
This may sound like a cliché, but it is profoundly true; therefore letting go is surrendering to this concept and going with the flow instead of fighting it, increasing suffering.
No matter how many times it happens, letting go is never easy. It takes courage to walk away from situations and relationships that are not serving anymore and to step forward into the unknown. Being afraid of letting go but, in the same time, being ready for change are not mutually exclusive, but resisting the process will curb our growth for sure.
When letting go, it is essential not to focus on the loss but on making room for better things to come. We need to focus on what we gain:
- Peace
- Lightness
- Energy
- Time
- Resources
- Love
- Courage
- Resilience
- Trust
The tension we create by clinging onto things and people not serving our growth anymore is released when we let go, and we can easily get into the state of flow.
Ways to learn to let go
Yoga and meditation can be of tremendous help in these situations if practiced regularly, because they promote change and help us accept change as well. When we can stand in our stillness amid chaos, we step into our own power.
Look at an autumn tree! Once used to be full of leaves, now looks messy, but it lives, and it is beautiful, as are we! We let go, and then we bloom again.
When we rely on nature to teach us, we can move with the natural rhythm of life without resistance. The more we succeed in this, the smoother our lives will get, and everything will work out perfectly.
