In all traditions, not only in the Christian one, this impeccable, general cleaning is mentioned, which we Romanians say we do at least on Easter and Christmas. Maybe you just finished cleaning in the farthest corner or under the sofas and cabinets, through the attic, cellar, or you had to empty a drawer, but what about your interior spaces, storages of memories, old and dusty feelings or states?
In this article, I invite you to take a look at the correspondence between your exterior and interior cleanliness, and if this shows you that any place or interior space needs to be cleared, I invite you not to procrastinate and see what you can do to have impeccable cleanliness inside you, in your mind, emotions, feelings.
When do you really make time for a deep cleaning? Both in the exterior and the interior?
I think that in the vast majority of us, the expression "Easter cleaning" has an echo. Maybe it reminds you of your mother when she put you to work, or of your wife, or of the fact that you had to sort your clothes in the dressing room or closet, sort and change them with spring clothes, give the ones that don't fit anymore, or they're too worn out, or you just don't like them anymore away.
I know many people who have too many clothes that, although they no longer fit, they cannot bear to give to others who would need them. Some time ago I was the same. I just did not find the time to sort all the clothes so I had some with 2 sizes bigger, which it was clear I could not wear anymore. What do you do when you have clothes that are too small and you do not fit into them anymore – not because of the extra fat, but because you grew up - if you are growing up - or maybe you have changed your composition and you don't fit into them anymore? What do you do with clothes that are too big and flutter on you, no longer fit you and you don't intend to gain weight anymore? You sort them and you find them another utility, don't you? Maybe give them to someone who needs them, transform them or use them for something else!
The same ... what do you do, when your office or workplace is filled with dust and debris, when you have nowhere to work? Or maybe the edge of the sink in the bathroom is filled with various things, or you have a box in the fridge where life begins to appear? ... In any of the situations, you clean at some point.
The right time to do this
When is that moment? And what is starting it? Of course, a decision, yours or someone else's who tells you that now you have to clean there, that this is no longer acceptable like it is! You know what I am talking about, don't you?!
Well, it is exactly the same with our interior space. If you do not take the decision to bring everything in order, to sort and keep only what is still useful to you, decides life for yourself and communicates this to you through a doctor who presents you with a not very beautifully colored future, through a husband or wife who tells you that he or she will not stay with you if you do not make some changes or that it is already too late to make them, through a friend or boss who fires you for reasons attributable to you, or in many other ways - because life is so inventive and surprising, that we are sometimes speechless when noticing what else has appeared. But nothing comes out of the blue, everything comes with purpose: always to make order and to teach something!
The principle of correspondence
Do you know the principle of correspondence? Hermes Trismegistus described it thus: “As above, so below, as below, so above. As within, so without, as without, so within”. The macrocosm and the microcosm are thus permanently found in perfect mirroring and correspondence. If you look strictly at the drunken neighbor who jumps to beat you, you really think that Trismegistus is a little wrong, but if you rise in perception high enough and look at the outside with detachment, you see that Trismegistus is right … in an impressive way even.
Mirroring the outside in the inside and vice versa
Therefore, returning to the earlier analogy, the outer world is a mirror of the inner. So, before you reach this neighborhood with this mirroring process, look at it starting from you; from your home and yard, from family and friends, but especially from within you. If you have cleaned up everywhere but still harbor resentment, anger, sadness, don't forgive someone or anything in your life, you're envious and always unhappy, or maybe you just often have a vague, bad feeling that something is wrong with you, look what is inside you that determines you to have these responses. You saw that sometimes we can be like a Ferrari, from 0 to 100 in 3 seconds, that there are some people or some situations that instantly drive us crazy or disturb us in a flash ... but after that, we feel that unwell echo for hours or days…
Look also in the "closet of your habits"! Is something there that you set out to transform, to change, and to renew?
Then observe your thoughts! Do you ruminate a lot on the past, leaving useless junk, which is too big or too tight, in your mind? Are you mostly in the present moment? Or do you dig into and mourn the past?
Where does most of your attention go?
